Annotate
Symbols that I use when annotating are usually stars. I use stars to indicate whether that particular part is important. I also use squiggly lines to indicate when something seems unusual to me or if it's just something I want to come back to.

Other ways to annotate effectively are to use different colors for different topics within the same article
Circle the date to try and get more information about why the author wrote the article.
Highlight interesting word choices used by the author.
You can also write personal notes to yourself in order to remember the article better.
